Lent is a time when we give up things such as chocolate or sugar and we prove to ourselves that we can do it, we are strong enough and we don't need these things for the whole 40 days. But it's not just about what we give up. It is about God. While Jesus was in the desert for those 40 days, he was tempted by the devil yet Jesus stood strong and mighty because he knew that God would protect him through his hunger, frustration, and loneliness. Jesus didn't go into the desert to give up people, food, or anything else. He went into the desert to get closer to God because in the not so distant future, he'd need all his trust in God. If we went into the desert, I'm sure there would be a lot of complaining, especially from me! But there would also be a lot of praying.
So in this season of Lent, what are you giving up? Not just what you're giving up but why? How is what you are giving up going to help your relationship with God and Christ grow?
